The three outlets are located in Evolve Concept Mall in Ara Damansara, da:mén Shopping Centre in Subang Jaya and Emerald Avenue in Selayang. Jaya Grocer is expected to be anchoring these new retail centres when they opened.
At the time of writing, Jaya Grocer has not confirmed to PTLM whether it will be opening at The Starling Mall in Damansara Uptown, Petaling Jaya in 2016. Another outlet will open at the retail podium of Pearl Suria (next to Pearl Point Shopping Mall) in Old Klang Road in 2016.
PTLM believes that Jaya Grocer is looking at several more retail centres and new commercial hubs, and probably an expansion outside of Klang Valley beyond 2016.
The upmarket supermarket business is expected to be heightened up dramatically in the Klang Valley with the fast expansion of Jaya Grocer and its perceived close competitors wooing the same affluent neighbourhood shoppers looking for quality imported products as well as convenience. Potential competitors are:
- Cold Storage,
- AEON Maxvalu,
- Village Grocer,
- Presto Grocer,
- Sam’s Groceria,
- Urbanfresh Marketplace,
- Ben’s Independent Grocer (B.I.G.),
- Mercato,
- Jasons Food Hall, and
- Isetan Supermarket.
Most of these names are expected to increase their store count over the coming years.
Village Grocer, in particular, has made known of its intention to expand its store count in prime shopping centres. Recently, the retailer soft-launched its latest outlet at Atria Shopping Gallery. Upcoming outlets are located at Empire City in Damansara Perdana, Plaza Arcadia in Desa ParkCity, M City at Jalan Ampang and MyTOWN Shopping Centre in Cochrane.
Nevertheless, Jaya Grocer has already positioned itself in a affluent, niche market focusing on shoppers’ lifestyles and being Malaysia’s first culinary grocerant. The grocer also has a range of organic, gluten-free food for the health conscious consumers.
Within some of Jaya Grocer stores, several in-house differentiating outlets were introduced.
For example, Fresco is a “groceraunt” which combines a grocer and a restaurant, Hank’s Fine Foods which caters to fresh meat products, The Baker’s Son breadshop, Hikari sushi bar, Bonjour Garden bakery cafe, Fuku Fuku non-halal food court and Vom Fass where oils, vinegars, liqueurs, whisky, cognac and rum are available for sampling before purchase.
Just last month on 15th May, Jaya Grocer opened the 13th outlet at the VERVE Shops in Mont Kiara.
